Franklin Energy Deemed Healthy Employer

Franklin Energy Services understands that employee health, both mental and physical, plays a very important role in personal growth, productivity and overall well-being. We feel it is important that our employees understand this, and encourage and support them to improve their lifestyles and become more physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually or spiritually fit. To assist in doing this, Franklin Energy created a corporate-wide Wellness Committee in 2010 that is led by Tina Semotan, Vice President of Human Resources and Organization Development, which focuses on educating and providing employees with resources for success. The Committee includes representatives from each of Franklin Energy’s 22 offices, and has organized a Bike to Work Day, promotes participation in local group events and creates company-wide wellness competitions.

Making wellness a priority in the workplace has resulted in Franklin Energy earning second place in the medium category (101-1000 employees) of The Business Journal’s Healthiest Employers Awards program.

The Healthiest Employers Awards program recognized 27 southeastern Wisconsin employers who have gone above and beyond when it comes to promoting the health and wellness of their employees. Participating companies were categorized by size, and ranked according to how they answered survey questions that measured their wellness program across six key categories – culture and leadership commitment; foundational components; strategic planning; communications and marketing; programming and interventions; and reporting and analysis.

Franklin Energy Executives Lead by Example

In addition to receiving a Healthiest Employer award, members from Franklin Energy’s executive team earned awards in September for both the individual and team competitions of the Milwaukee BizTimes Media Fittest Execs challenge.

The six-month Fittest Execs competition is an annual event that is open to senior level executives in southeastern Wisconsin who want to improve their personal fitness and corporate wellness. Four executives per company are able to compete. Participants are put through a five-part fitness assessment to measure endurance, strength, flexibility and body makeup to determine fitness and health levels.

As a team, Paul Schueller, CEO; Tina Semotan, Vice   President of Human Resources and Organization Development;  Steve Anderson, CFO; and Fred   Dreher, Vice President of Client Services, represented Franklin Energy in the   competition. Together they focused on changing their eating habits, exercising regularly and relying on each other for support; all things they also encourage their staff to do.

At the recent Fittest Execs award reception, Franklin Energy was awarded first place in the team competition. The combined results of Schueller, Anderson, Semotan and Dreher, beat out executive teams from eight other participating companies.

Semotan and Schueller also placed in the individual competition, which included over 90 executives. For the second consecutive year, Semotan placed first in her age category and ranked first place overall in the competition. Schueller ranked twelfth place overall, and was a finalist in his age category.

Achieving Goals Together as a Team

As Franklin Energy continues to expand, both geographically and in staffing, the company culture remains consistent in that it encourages employees to maintain a healthy work/life balance. Recently, a group of 18 employees from some of Franklin Energy’s Wisconsin offices trained for, and participated together in, a triathlon as “Team Franklin”.

The Elkhart Lake Triathlon was held on June 11, 2011 and included both an Olympic and Sprint event. Eleven employees participated in the Sprint race and swam 400M, biked 20K and ran 5K. Seven Olympic race participants, including executives Ed Carroll and Fred Dreher, swam for 1.5K, biked for 45K bike and ran for 10K.

This is the fourth year Franklin Energy participated in this event as a team, with 2011 marking the highest number of employee participants. Aside from cloudy skies and cold weather, the team had a great time reaching their goals together, and crossing the finish line injury free and smiling.
