Paul Schueller, Chief Executive Officer

Paul Schueller is the CEO of Franklin Energy, managing client relationships and providing strategic oversight to the company’s delivery of implementation services for energy efficiency programs. He founded the company in 1994.

Prior to starting Franklin Energy, Paul was responsible for the start-up of a successful consulting company. The company later merged with two other holdings, to form Energy 2000. Paul served as the managing director and shareholder for this company from start-up through growth to 25 employees and seven figure monthly sales. A licensed professional engineer, he began his career with two Wisconsin utilities where he managed multi-million dollar construction projects and designed and implemented internal energy efficiency programs.

Paul earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He serves on the Board of Directors for Franklin Energy and is a director for two external boards.
 

Dan Tarrence, President

Dan Tarrence was named President of Franklin Energy in 2007 after serving as General Manager for 13 years. With 20 years of experience in the energy efficiency industry, Dan has provided the leadership necessary for Franklin’s strong growth in 2008 from 70 employees to more than 140 at year-end. He led the development of the Human Resources, Information Technology, Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Marketing departments to support the successful implementation of energy efficiency programs for the company’s clients. He built the foundation to expand company offered services into 2009 and beyond with his expertise in the delivery of energy efficiency programs.

Dan has managed the Commercial Programs for the Wisconsin Focus on Energy statewide energy efficiency programs for four years, oversaw multi-family programs for the state of Wisconsin, and lead program managers of agricultural, industrial, and residential programs. He is active in the energy efficiency community through presentations at national conferences and has served as the chairperson of the AESP Implementation Topic Committee since 2006.

In the early 1990’s, Dan was the Midwest Operations and Finance Manager for DMC Services where he managed programs in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. In four years, he contributed to a 10-fold increase of business in the Midwest Region. He started as Program Manager for the Wisconsin Electric Smart Money program in 1990.

He earned a MBA from Arizona State University and a BBA-Finance from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.

Nels Andersen, Vice President - Engineering

Nels was named Vice President of Engineering in February 2009. Previously he was Director of Engineering for the company.  In his role, he oversees a technical staff which provides support and review of energy-efficiency project proposals for our utility end-use customers.  Nels was instrumental in the development of an internal Technical Guidebook including a centralized measures database that ensures continuity and integrity among staffs' energy savings calculations.

During his eight years with Franklin, Nels has managed traditional Prescriptive Incentive, Custom Incentive and Request for Proposal (RFP) programs.  He has also led pilot programs in Wisconsin including The Energy Efficiency Performance Program which resulted in almost 34 GWh of annual electrical savings, 550,000 therms of annual gas savings and $1.7M in annual energy savings for the participating customers. He continues to manage a performance contacting program in Iowa and a Survey Program for municipal customers in Wisconsin.

Nels also leads the development and training of all Franklin Energy staff. He has implemented a 30-60-90 day training program for new staff.  Additionally, he developed a curriculum that ensures technical and non-technical staff keep up-to-date on energy efficiency technologies and receives the resources they need to remain efficient and effective in their day-to-day work.

Prior to joining Franklin Energy, Nels managed a materials engineering laboratory for Rexnord Technical Services and implement and managed QA/QC procedures that resulted in GM, A2LA, and QS9000 accreditation.  He also served as a patent administrator for SKF.

Nels earned both a B.S. and Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University.

Ed Carroll, Vice President - Program Design & Development

Ed joined Franklin Energy in October 2008. He is a 16-year veteran in the energy efficiency industry, with expertise in building science, and energy efficiency program design, planning and administration. His experience spans the design, implementation and administration of programs serving residential, commercial, schools, agricultural and industrial customer groups.

Prior to joining Franklin Energy, Ed was one of three principals of Glacier Consulting Group, Madison where he was responsible for the firm's energy efficiency program design and implementation.

Ed also served in a variety of leadership roles for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (WECC) during his 10 year career with that organization. These roles included Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development where he was responsible for leading the company’s internal research effort.

Ed also served as WECC’s Director of Business Programs, where he directed a team of 70 staff and subcontractors in the development and delivery of Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy statewide commercial, schools, government, agriculture and industrial energy efficiency and demand reduction programs. In program year 2006-07, this project yielded over 157 million kWh, 33 MW, and 13 million therms of verified gross savings for Wisconsin business customers.

Previously, he served as WECC’s Director of Residential Programs, leading a staff in the design and delivery of Focus on Energy’s residential energy efficiency programs. Ed specialized in building-related efficiency programs, leading the design and implementation of Home Performance for existing homes, and Wisconsin ENERGY STAR® Homes serving the new construction market. Under Ed’s leadership, these programs emphasized both energy and non-energy (comfort, enhanced air quality, combustion safety) benefits resulting from home performance improvements.

Ed also served as Vice President and General Manager for a consulting firm, mSolve, LLC, which provides building-science based consultation to the commercial and residential building and environmental insurance industry. Ed led the design and implementation of these services to help building owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and their insurers avoid common building performance issues associated with newly constructed buildings.

Ed received a B.A. in Psychology form the University of Dayton, Ohio and an M.S. in Energy Analysis & Policy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Fred Dreher, Vice President - Program Implementation

Fred Dreher joined Franklin Energy in 2003 and is an executive leader in the implementation of energy efficiency programs for the company’s utilities and government agency clients. In his current role as Vice President, he oversees the effective start up and management of multiple programs Franklin Energy is contracted to perform. This includes providing leadership for the management of customer service, quality control, budgets, savings goals, reporting, and personnel management.

One of Fred’s recent accomplishments at Franklin Energy is the successful cost effective implementation and goal achievement of energy efficiency programs for We Energies, Wisconsin’s largest gas and electric utility. These programs saved over 40MW of demand from large and small non-residential and multifamily customers. This goal was achieved on time and under budget.

Over the past 21 years, Fred has managed some very large and ground-breaking energy efficiency programs. Some of these include the Wisconsin Electric (now We Energies) Smart Money program, Consumers Power’s Non-Residential Reduce the Use program and the Commercial Sector of Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program.

Prior to joining Franklin Energy, Fred was involved in energy efficiency services for Aspen Systems (Lockheed Martin), Daniel Mann Johnson and Mendenhall and ANCO Engineers.

He holds a BS. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville and is a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

Kevin McKinnon, Vice President - Business Development

Kevin McKinnon joined Franklin Energy in 2005 and leads the sales and marketing efforts for the company. Previously at Franklin Energy, Kevin assumed responsibility for several key energy efficiency programs for utility clients, including We Energies and NVEnergy, while leading the overall company sales effort.

Kevin provides leadership and direction to the business in its efforts to establish and
increase market share and generate new business by developing opportunities in existing and new markets. Kevin continues to be involved in new program start-ups.

He has over 20 years of experience in various leadership roles in the energy efficiency and utility metering industry. As a Regional Director for Honeywell, Kevin directly managed large energy efficiency programs across the United States and grew a key territory from one local utility program to ten programs in the Midwest United States. As Director of National Sales for Honeywell Utility Solutions, Kevin continued to grow Honeywell’s market share in the utility services business, including directing Honeywell’s entrance into the automated meter reading services business.

After his tenure with Honeywell, Kevin worked with two start-up companies. He was General Manager for Pentech Solutions, a San Diego based Technology Company providing remote HVAC energy management solutions for commercial customers. He then played a similar role for AMRON Technologies, a remote metering solutions provider to gas and electric utilities.

Directly before joining Franklin Energy, Kevin was Director of Sales for Terasen Utility Solutions, a utility metering services company based in Milwaukee, WI. At Terasen, Kevin was responsible for business development and customer services across the United States.

Kevin is actively involved in professional organizations including the Association of Energy Services Professionals (AESP), which included a term on the Board of Directors. He has made numerous presentations at national conferences of utility professional organizations during his career.

Kevin holds a BA in Journalism and Business from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.

Tom Quasius, Vice President - Operations

Tom has been in the energy industry for nearly 15 years. He currently serves as Vice President-Operations and is responsible for the creation and management of Franklin Energy’s successful hiring strategy. This included the development of a strategic recruitment and training plan that has helped hire over 100 qualified energy professionals to serve the company’s client needs. Tom is also responsible for overseeing operations and facilities at Franklin Energy’s 10 locations across the country.

For the past two years, he has served as the Senior Program Manager for the Commercial Sector of Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency and renewable energy program. Under his leadership, the commercial program has successfully increased participation, designed creative ways to market and has gross savings of approximately 30,000 kW; 125,000,000 kWh and 2,500,000 therms. In March of 2008, Focus on Energy was awarded with a Sustained Excellence award by ENERGY STAR with special recognition for the efforts of the Commercial sector.

Prior to joining Franklin Energy in 2006, Tom worked for Inland Power Group managing the technical sales of power generation equipment into renewable energy applications such as landfill gas and digester gas to energy projects throughout the Midwest. Previously, he was the Director of Manufacturing for Catalyst Power| ABB where he was on a product start up team designing and building a power quality and distributed generation solution for commercial applications. He has also held positions at Kohler Power Systems in various roles including starting up Kohler’s Rental Power Division during Y2K and Managing the Quality/Inspection department of Kohler’s Generator Division.

Tom earned a BA from Arizona State University.

Jason Weiss, Chief Financial Officer

Jason Weiss joined Franklin Energy in 2008 as Chief Financial Officer. He is a CPA with diverse experience in the banking, healthcare and professional services industries. He provides strategic, financial and operational planning to the corporation and works with program managers to monitor program implementation budgets. Jason oversees the company’s IT department and is responsible for streamlining of accounting and payroll processes.

While at GE Healthcare, he held roles as a financial manager for a $1 billion P&L and global cash flows. At Deloitte Consulting, he spent five years working with large U.S. and Australian clients in the design and implementation of programs that delivered measurable financial results. Most recently, he worked in the Equity Capital Markets group of Robert W. Baird providing market research and valuation analysis.

He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and a BA in Accounting and Computer Science from Lakeland College.
