Efficiency is Our Middle Name

It is one thing to tell others why they should think about sustainability and energy efficiency; it is another to follow these same practices yourself. Practicing energy efficiency comes naturally for us; it is simply what we do. Sustainability requires us to be creative sometimes and in 2005 we took an unusual approach when we needed more office space. After all, not many people look at a 90-year-old abandoned church building and think, “This would make great office space.” But after a lot of creative changes and efficient upgrades, that’s exactly what the space has become for us.

The steeple has been removed but from the outside our offices still resemble a church. Once inside the building, it’s apparent that cubes have replaced pews and space has been created for about 35 corporate employees. Structures and history were left in place where able; stained glass windows are intact and there are a few remnant pews here and there. Changes converted a choir loft to eight work spaces, the altar area to a meeting room, and the church hall to a training facility.

Many of the lighting fixtures remain, but now utilize efficient ballasts and bulbs. All work spaces use cubicles made of recycled materials and the HVAC systems were updated to efficiently heat and cool the building.

Some may find it unusual for a corporate headquarters to be nestled in a residential neighborhood within a structure that is unmistakably a church. We find it to be an ideal use of space, and are proud of the Wisconsin Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Leadership Award that we received in 2006 for the effort.
